Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
