Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
