European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
